Garcetti, Feuer, LA City Councilmen Urged To Withdraw Endorsements Of District Attorney Jackie Lacey
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Activists are calling on Los Angeles officials to withdraw their endorsements of Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey, who is running for a third term.
Najee Ali of Project Islamic Hope and Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable say Mayor Eric Garcetti, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer and city councilmen Herb Wesson, David Ryu and Paul Krekorian should publicly withdraw their support of Lacey, who is the first African American woman in the office.
"Lacey has failed to protect citizens from police abuse and police murder," Ali said.
Over the weekend, Rep. Adam Schiff and Assemblywoman Laura Friedman withdrew their endorsements, and Garcetti last week said "it may be" time for a change in that office.
To date, Lacey has charged one officer, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy Luke Liu, for shooting an unarmed man who allegedly struck him with a vehicle during a traffic stop.
In that case, Lacey said the use of force was not reasonable, a key factor that often determines whether an officer is prosecuted in a deadly shooting.
Lacey released this statement Monday: "As an African-American who has taken on systemic racism my whole life, this effort is pointed at the wrong person...I am running against a man who failed to prosecute he officers involved in he very case that led Colin Kapernick to take a knee and a man who never prosecuted an officer-involved shooting case."
In November, Lacey will face former Gascon, who is regarded as a progressive prosecutor.
