Doctor Sentenced For Fatal Botched Home Gall Bladder Surgery

TORRANCE (AP) — A doctor has been sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation in the case of a patient who died during gallbladder surgery at an Inglewood home that served as a medical clinic.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram says Dr. Roberto Bonilla also was ordered Friday to serve 1,000 hours of a community service at a medical clinic, although his service cannot involve patient care.

Bonilla is receiving credit for 90 days already served in jail and will serve his remaining jail time on 30 consecutive weekends.

Bonilla was convicted last month of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 30-year-old Osvaldo Hernandez, who stopped breathing after being given a local anesthetic in preparation for gallbladder surgery.

An autopsy determined Hernandez died of a lidocaine overdose.
