DA Won't File Charges Against LA Union Leader

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors have declined to file grand theft charges against a prominent Los Angeles union official and his wife.

A lawyer for Josif Kahraman, the head of the Engineers and Architects Association, and his wife, Ani said Thursday the couple was pleased with the district attorney's decision.

Prosecutors had said Wednesday that there wasn't enough evidence to pursue the case.

The Kahramans were arrested last week after being accused by other union members of taking a laptop computer.

Attorney Lara Yeretsian said that as executive director of the union, Kahraman had every right to possess the laptop computer.

Josif Kahraman remains on paid administrative leave from Los Angeles's largest union, which represents about 5,000 city employees.
