2 Killed, Multiple Victims Injured In Encino Apartment Fire

ENCINO (CBSLA.com) — Two people have died and several others were treated for minor injuries as crews Thursday battled a fire a corner unit of a three-story apartment building.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire broke out in a third-floor unit shortly before 9 p.m. in the 5300 block of Lindley Avenue near Newcastle Avenue.

It was unclear if anyone was inside the unit when the fire broke out.

Firefighters conducted evacuations and rescued neighbors inside the building.

"Firefighters are surrounding that area and are bringing hose lines through the stairwells and conducting drop bag operations," said Eric Scott of the LAFD. "There is an abundance of smoke through that hallway."

Sky9's Stu Mundel reported from above that firefighters could be seen cutting ventilation holes on the roof as the fire burned through what appeared to be an attic.

LAFD officials reported about 100 firefighters knocked down the blaze in a little more than an hour.

Arson investigators were on scene, and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Firefighters are expected to conduct a full investigation to assess the damage done to the building.
