Investigators say 59-year-old Shirley Mayberry was helping about 20 children cross the street in the unincorporated Florence area when she tried to stop a sport utility vehicle turning into the intersection Monday afternoon.
Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker says Mayberry told the driver of a black Ford Expedition that he must stop. The couple allegedly got out of the SUV and beat her before fleeing with her stop sign and whistle.
Deputies arrested 27-year-old Jose Hernandez and 20-year-old Vanessa Del Pilar Martinez.
Mayberry had bumps and bruises, but she refused medical treatment at the scene.
