City Workers Rescue 78-Year-Old Driver From Oncoming Train In Fullerton

FULLERTON (CBS) — Two city workers are being hailed heroes Tuesday after pulling a 78-year-old man from his car minutes before it was crushed by an Amtrak train in Fullerton.

"It's something you see on TV but once it's in real life, it's a whole different story," Fullerton city worker, Jonathon Cuevas, said.

Apparently, the elderly man's car was involved in a collision near the intersection of Basque and Commonwealth avenues before it was sent through two fences and onto the railroad tracks.

Cuevas and fellow city worker, Hector Encinas, witnessed the initial accident and rushed to the driver's aid.

"He said he couldn't feel his legs at that time so I helped him move his body and pulled his legs out of the vehicle and that's when we just grabbed him with our shoulders and carried him out of the tracks," Encinas said.

"Within five minutes after he was off of the tracks, the train came by and took out the car," Cuevas added.

The driver was transported to a local hospital only complaining of some pain.

No one on board the train was injured.
