Canyon Country Man Gets 26 Years To Life For Bicyclist's Death
SAN FERNANDO (CBS) — A Canyon Country man was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison Tuesday for plowing his pickup truck into four bicyclists, killing one in an accident that took place in July 2009.
Marco Antonio Valencia was convicted on April 27, of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a .08 blood-alcohol level causing injury.
The charges stem from an accident on July 11, 2009, when Valencia struck four cyclists on Bouquet Canyon Road, killing 43-year-old Joseph Novotny of Stevenson Ranch.
The other three riders eventually recovered.
Valencia, who was on probation for two separate misdemeanor DUI cases at the time of the crash, fled the crash scene but was arrested about 90 minutes later.
