Caltech Named 2nd Best University In The World

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — We're number 1… almost! Pasadena's Caltech has been ranked the second best university in the world, narrowly edged out by Harvard, according to the London-based Times Higher Education magazine.

Caltech is second only to Harvard, with a margin of difference of just .1 on a 1-to-100 scale. Harvard scored 96.1 and CalTech scored 96.

UCLA was also ranked the 11th best university in the world and the eighth best in the United States. Cross-town rival USC was rated number 73 in the world and 48 in the nation. However, U.S News and World report recently ranked USC 23rd among national universities, while UCLA came in at 25.

The list, called the World University Ranking list, rates schools five categories: the influence of its research, the quality of the teaching, the volume of its research, the diversity of its staff and students and how well it passes on its wealth of knowledge.
