CA Controller To Audit City Of Montebello
MONTEBELLO (AP) — The California controller will audit the city of Montebello because of financial irregularities and suspicions that it submitted false, incomplete or incorrect financial reports.
John Chiang announced the audit Thursday in a letter to officials in the San Gabriel Valley city.
He noted that Montebello has used restricted funds to cover operating expenses and that $1 million in city funds was found to have moved through off-the-book accounts.
Mayor Art Barajas tells the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that the city will cooperate.
It's the first such audit since Chiang investigated the city of Bell last year and found massive misconduct.
Montebello also is under investigation by Los Angeles County prosecutors. Last year, it was the subject of a federal audit that found housing grant money was misused.
