Bill Would Ban Bicyclists From Texting, Talking On Cell Phones
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — It could soon be illegal to talk on a cell phone while riding a bicycle.
A bill on Gov. Jerry Brown's desk would impose fines on bicyclists who text or talk on the phone without a hands-free device.
The proposal is based on a similar California law banning the use of cell phones while driving a vehicle, which took effect in 2008. Both were sponsored by State Sen. Joe Simitian, a Democrat from Palo Alto.
If approved, the first-time fine for bicyclists would be $20.
No details have been released about when the bill could be signed or would go into effect.
