Alhambra Man, 73, Arrested For 31-Year-Old Murder

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A 73-year-old Alhambra man was arrested this week in connection with a 1981 murder.

Abraham Tovar was arrested Wednesday on an outstanding felony homicide warrant in connection with the murder of 36-year-old Charles McGhee on Jan. 1, 1981. McGhee had been shot and beaten to death in a vacant lot in the 2300 block of South Central Avenue in Los Angeles.

Police say the suspects, brothers Andrew and Abraham Tovar, had a dispute with someone earlier that day in the vacant lot, so they returned to the lot, armed with a handgun and a hatchet, seeking revenge.

When the brothers couldn't find the person they were looking for, they turned their anger on Charles McGhee and Wayne Alexis, police said. Abraham allegedly shot both men, killing McGhee at the scene.

Alexis survived his gunshot wound and testified against Andrew Tovar, who served state prison time and has since died. Abraham Tovar, however, remained a fugitive from the law for 31 years, police said.
