2 Men Get 6 Years In Deadly Motorcycle Race
NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — Two men were sentenced Friday to six years in prison for their part in a motorcycle race that ended in a fatal crash.
Prosecutors say Daniel Cody Burkett and Blaise Aaron Meadows were racing at speeds up to 100 mph on the Foothill Transportation Corridor early on April 25, 2008 when Burkett's motorcycle crashed into the back of an Alfa Romeo.
The car veered off the tollway and slammed into a light pole before flipping onto its roof and landing in a parking lot, Deputy District Attorney Susan Price said.
The driver, 46-year-old Andrew Parker, died at the scene. Meadows was hospitalized with broken bones, while Burkett fled, Price said.
Meadows' license had been suspended because of four tickets – three for speeding and one for running a red light – at the time of the crash.
Both men were offered six years in prison in exchange for guilty pleas, and they both pleaded guilty in January to gross vehicular manslaughter.
As part of Meadow' plea deal, a murder charge was dismissed.
