2 Men Convicted In Westminster Street Racing Crash That Killed 18-Year-Old

SANTA ANA ( — Officials announced Friday that two men were convicted for their involvement in a street-racing crash that resulted in the death of a woman.

According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, Jorel Dayoan, 22, of Westminster was convicted by jury Thursday of one felony count of vehicular manslaughter by an unlawful manner of driving with gross negligence, and one felony count of engaging in a speed contest causing specified injury.

Joshua Lautherboren, 26, of Garden Grove was also convicted by jury on Thursday of one felony count of engaging in a speed contest causing specified injury, and one felony count of being involved in an accident resulting in an injury or death and failing to stop, the District Attorney's Office explained.

Police said around 5 p.m. April 5, 2012, Dayoan was driving in his Toyota MR-2 southbound on Hoover Street in Westminster with his younger sister, Jessica Dayoan, to drop her off at Golden West College for biology class.

He proceeded to engage in a street race with Lautherboren, who was driving a Dodge pickup, for about a quarter mile on a straight stretch of Hoover Street.

Officers said Lautherboren began to slow his truck, and Dayoan lost control of his vehicle, which began to drift into oncoming traffic, just south of Hazard Avenue. Dayoan's vehicle crashed into a Honda Accord.

Orange County Fire Authority responders said they took the driver of the Honda to UCI Medical Center in Orange to be treated for a broken collarbone sustained in the crash.

Jessica Dayoan was pronounced dead at the scene, officials reported.

According to police, Lautherboren fled southbound on Hoover Street from the scene of the accident.

Officers were able to match witnesses' descriptions of his vehicle and took Lautherboren into custody two days later.

Dayoan faces a maximum sentence of up to six years and eight months in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Lautherboren faces a maximum sentence of up to four years and eight months in state prison.

Both men are scheduled to return for their sentencing arraignments Feb. 6 in Santa Ana.
