2 critically injured after head-on crash on Highway 371 in Aguanga

Two people were in critical condition following a head-on crash on Highway 371 near Aguanga, located about 20 minutes east of Temecula, on Thursday.

It happened at around 12:30 p.m. on the two-lane road, just north of Lake Riverside Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators say that a 50-year-old man from Bozeman, Montana who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala and a 45-year-old man from Santa Ana that was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry crashed into each other, leaving both in critical condition days later.

Neither of the men has yet been identified.

"For reasons which are under investigation, the driver of the Toyota crossed over double yellow lines into the opposing lane," CHP officers said. "As the Toyota crossed into the opposing lane, the sedan and the Chevy were involved in a head-on traffic collision."

Both vehicles sustained major damage in the crash, police said.

It took Riverside County Fire Department crews about 20 minutes to arrive to the scene, where they had to use hydraulic-powered tools to free the drivers that were trapped inside of their mangled cars.

Both were rushed to the Lake Riverside Airport by paramedics, before they were airlifted to different hospitals for treatment on what firefighters called extensive life-threatening injuries.

The road was shut down for nearly two hours as the investigation continued.

No further information was provided.
