Manly Minute -- 5 GREAT MEN OF THE 80'S
Much of the 1980s was defined by the shifting trajectory of the Cold War, with its initial escalation reflected everywhere in popular culture (think Ivan Drago as the Soviet juggernaut in 1985's Rocky IV, or Red Dawn's "What If?" story of Communist aggression). The end of the decade saw the decline and dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the conclusion of the 40-year conflict that had informed the American consciousness for a generation. While it lasted, though, the U.S./Communism battle spilled over into other battlegrounds -- Nicaragua, Afghanistan -- and it would continue to affect American foreign policy for decades. Its ripple effect is evident in practically everything that came out of the '80s, from video games about fighting Communists to songs about fighting Communists.
This list is ranked by the impact these men had on their fields, their genres and especially the degree to which their international presence influenced culture at large. Most were visible stars in their day, but some exercised a more subtle influence only recognized among their peers at the time (though certainly felt today in retrospect).
