Get Your Car Ready for Summer! (mostly because I need to rip you off so my kids can go to summer camp).

I don't want to be that guy. I really don't.

Always bitter.  Always cynical.  Always suspicious.

But as the owner of more than one auto repair shop and a certified mechanic and automotive journalist for more than 20 years, the truth must set me free. Our industry thrives on keeping you in the dark. On keeping you clueless. And yes, by seperating you from  your hard-earned money for unnecessary services.

I'm already seeing the promotions.  They're coming from small garages. Large shops. Dealerships. National chains.

Here's the language:

"Get Your Car Ready For Summer! Coolant  Special!  A/C service! "

And here's the translation:

"I am a broke mechanic and I need your money. Come to me for unnecessary services".

You think I'm kidding? Think again.

Here's the reality check: Cars are stupid. They don't own a day planner. They have no idea if it's July 4th or Christmas Day.

AUTOMOBILES  DON'T NEED SEASONAL SERVICES!

Whew. I said it. I feel better.

Now take look at another one of my favorite rip offs:

This is an actual copy of coupon from a shop. It is also an actual rip-off that is about as common as a Charlie Sheen meltdown.

The scam begins by telling you the shop will do a "performance check" of your A/C.  They will also do a system pressure check, "vent" temperature check, and belt check. All for the low, low price of about 30 bucks.

Do you want to know what they really do? Get ready.............

The mechanic will turn on your A/C and put his hand in front of the vent. If it's cold,  he will  back into a parking space and take your money. Hood closed. Door closed. Case closed.

I'm serious. And the reason is that if your car is blowing cold air, the refrigerant pressures, A/C compressor, etc., are ALL in working condition!

Let me put this in another context:

When was the last time you had a "performance check" on your kitchen refrigerator?

Really? Never?  And yet you say the milk still tastes cold?

Well, I know I'm a just a pro mechanic and all, but I'm guessing there's NOTHING wrong with your refrigerator.

And I'm also guessing since your car A/C is blowing cold, you probably don't need to spend any money on inspecting it.

Here's the bottom line: Don't buy the hype. Avoid the strong marketing push that forces you to spend money on your car because of the time of year. Instead,  just follow the recommendations for normal service that are clearly outlined in the cars owner's manual.

I feel like a need a nap. I'm exhausted.

But can someone first call my kids and tell them that they can't go to camp this year?
