Weather Has Softball Players Singing, "Rain, Rain, Go Away!"

RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - With more rain headed toward North Texas, a local college softball team is trying to make up for lost time -- while they can.

Needless to say, the playing fields at the University of Texas at Dallas have been wrecked by wet weather.

A short reprieve had the fields looking great Monday and the UTD girls' softball team took advantage. Players grabbed their bats and gloves and played two games Monday that had been postponed twice, since the end of last month.

It may have sounded like spring Monday, but with the recent winter weather, it sure hasn't felt or looked that way.

Rain, sleet and snow left the practice fields at UTD looking more like a bog. Hard work by groundskeepers eventually paid off for softball player Avery McHugh and her teammates.

"I'm just so thankful it looks as good as it does," McHugh said with a smile. "It was a swamp this last weekend."

So far this season, Coach Brad Posner says Mother Nature has been the only one who has scored a shutout. "Oh, big time. Before yesterday, our last game was over a month ago and most of our practices have been indoors."

Wet weather, muddy playing fields and fractured schedules have been the norm for ballplayers across North Texas and the state.

Folks at UTD know things could have been worse, and are glad their athletic director upgraded the infield in 2014. Coach Posner said it has made all the difference in getting back on schedule.

"This ground holds so much more water now that we put in a new infield mix," he said. "I don't know that the old infield mix could have handled this kind of weather."

The weather may be the toughest opponent for Avery McHugh, as she chases two school records. "I think I'm close to doubles and RBI's and so the more at bats I get the better. So I'm looking forward to it."

McHugh started playing t-ball when she was just three-years-old and continued playing softball all the way through college. This is her last year at UTD, so breaking a school record would mean a lot.

UTD is leaving nothing to chance – since there is rain in the forecast Tuesday the softball game has been moved to 11 a.m. to try and beat the opposing team and the wet weather.
