Visually Impaired Students Attend Tech Summer Camp
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) - Fort Worth's Camp Carter YMCA is expanding its vision: to bring summer fun and technology to a special group of blind and visually impaired students.
Twelve middle, high school and vocational students from across North Texas are joining sighted students for a week long "mini-camp within a camp."
During the group sharing event students will learn how to use technology, like iPads, to help better navigate the web and improve their skills.
"All children enjoy being with other children, no matter what level of visual awareness they have," Lighthouse for the Blind president and CEO Platt Allen said. "For each one of these kids, we're hopeful that they'll all choose to go to college. And if this piece of technology can help them achieve that objective then we've done our part."
Lighthouse for the Blind of Fort Worth raised more than $20,000 to sponsor the campers.
It's an investment they believe will reap lifelong rewards.
"I've never messed with an iPad before," 18-year-old camper Juan Davila said excitedly. "So I'm learning how to use it. When you get a job you're going to have to know technology and apply it in your work area."
The Camp Carter YMCA will host the technology campers through Friday.
