Suspicious Package Causes Post Office Evacuation

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A post office in Fort Worth was evacuated for hours on Tuesday after a suspicious package was found outside. The package was destroyed when authorities determined that it did not contain any explosives and posed no threat.

The package was reported around 10:30 a.m. at the post office, in the 4600 block of East Rosedale. There were reports of injuries.

As experts worked at the scene Postal Inspector Amanda McMurray told KRLD NewsRadio 1080, "A box has been left out front of the Polytechnic Station in Fort Worth. Right now we don't have any reason to believe that the parcel itself is dangerous, however out of an abundance of caution postal inspectors and [the] Fort Worth bomb squad are on site."

In addition to the bomb squad, Fort Worth police, FBI and the ATF assisted US Postal Inspectors with the incident.

As Chopper 11 flew over the scene the bomb detection robot could be seen maneuvering toward the package and a bomb squad officer was being fitted with protective gear.

While people often accidentally leave packages outside post office locations, McMurray said this one raised a few suspicions and better safe than sorry. "Unfortunately in today's society we have to treat everything as it might be dangerous, even if our suspicions lead us to believe that they probably are not," she said. "So in this case, we've had to treat it as a potentially dangerous item, but we don't believe it is at this point."

In addition to the post office building being evacuated, police also cordoned off an area around the building.

According to Fort Worth Fire Department officials, this is the third time in recent months that they have responded to a suspicious package call at the Polytechnic postal location.
