Reports of Tornado Touching Down In Collin County
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — There are reports of a tornado touching down in Collin County, near Farmersville.
The possible twister would have spawned from severe weather that blew through the town of Krum. Weather in that area blew down barns, fences and power lines.
The same system moved through McKinney with heavy rain and high winds.
The storm continued moving east and passed over Farmerville, a city located in northeastern Collin County. It was there where reports are coming in of a tornado touching down.
Around 8:15 p.m. officials with the Collin County Sheriff's Office told CBS 11 that two homes had been completely destroyed in northwestern Hunt County, near County Road 1081.
At 8:33 p.m. the Greenville Police Department sent out tweets reporting a tornado on the ground and heading toward Commerce.
Dangerous weather in north Texas began with a severe thunderstorm that pummeled Denton with hail as large as grapefruit and softballs.
The National Weather Service reports hail of 3½-inch diameters and larger fell along U.S. 380 north of downtown Denton shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday. Denton city spokeswoman Lindsay Baker says reports of broken windows and windshields and other hail damage were widespread along that corridor, including the Texas Woman's University campus. No injuries were reported.
Schools and businesses in the area closed and sheltered anyone there in place. As the storm passed through the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) trains stopped running.
Oncor is reporting thousands of power outages all across North Texas.
