Plano Firefighter's Organ Donation Saves Two Lives
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - There was an emotional meeting between the family of a Plano firefighter and two of the lives he helped save through organ donation.
Brody Fleming was 24. He died after suffering a stroke last year.
Brody's family met his two kidney recipients for the first time Wednesday.
"It's a special day to finally get to meet the people that he gave his life for," said Jim Fleming, Brody's father.
"It's like being able to visit Brody again. It's not the face and stuff. It's the life there," he said.
One of the kidney recipients was 18-year-old Brandon Pritchard.
"They told me my donor's family was wanting to meet me and I was excited but a little nervous? And I was like, 'That's awesome!" he said.
They all met inside the Heart Center Meditation Garden at Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth.
There were smiles, hugs and tears. Brandon had been on dialysis four years. Brody gave him a new life.
Brandon's mom, Joy Bradley, hugged Brandon hard.
"What a gift, huh? What a gift," she said.
"Pretty amazing. It's like a relief knowing he's still here with us," Jim Fleming said.
Brody's organ donations will help as many as 100 people.
So, he will always be remembered as a firefighter who saved many lives.
Every day, across the country, the lives of 75 people are saved through organ transplants. 117-thousand people are on the waiting list.
Afterwards, there was the Celebration of Life, an event that honors the memory of those who gave the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation and those who have received the gift of life over the past 26 years through Texas Health Fort Worth.
