Barricaded Dallas Man Taken Into Custody
Updated 4:07 p.m. DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police are not yet releasing the name of the man they took into custody at Vista Dallas Apartments, citing HIPAA, a law that protects an individual's health information. The suspect is being evaluated and Dallas Police have not determined if any charges will be filed. While officers initially responded to a shots fired call at the apartment building, police have not found a weapon and have not found any evidence of gun shots.
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A man who fired shots inside of a downtown Dallas luxury apartment building is in police custody, nearly three hours after the standoff began. Dallas police responded to reports of shots fired inside of the Vista Dallas apartments, located in the 2300 block of Houston Street, shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly before 1:00 p.m. Tuesday after the Dallas SWAT deployed gas into the suspect's fifth floor apartment in the seven-story high-rise. The suspect had barricaded himself inside of the apartment for more than two hours.
The suspect was seen briefly on his balcony (video above), trying to escape the gas that police deployed into the apartment.
CBS 11 News reporter Steve Pickett said that a loud boom was heard inside of the apartment building around noon, which was later identified as a flash bang, used inside of the apartment of the active shooter as a distraction device.
The situation started with reports of shots fired inside of the complex. It is unclear how many shots were fired. No injuries have been reported.
Sources told CBS 11 News that SWAT was able to place cameras under the man's doorway and could see him lying face down, reportedly in his bed. The cameras showed that he was without clothes, but they could not see any signs of a gun. Police saw the man move and established some communication with him.
A week ago, apartment staff went to the man's apartment in an attempt to evict him, and sources said that he came to the door naked.
CBS 11 News crews, who responded to the scene and set up near the apartment complex and in the Perot Museum parking lot, were told to move for safety reasons.
A Vista Dallas resident told CBS 11 News that he received an email warning of an armed man inside of their complex, and was told to stay inside and lock his door. Residents of the next door W hotel also received an email warning about the active shooter. A fifth floor Vista Dallas resident reported seeing officers with guns drawn on her floor earlier in the morning.
The nearby Perot Museum, Dallas World Aquarium, Uplift Lunar Prep Academy, AT&T Performing Arts Center, and W Hotel were all placed on lockdown as police investigated. Booker T. Washington Magnet High School was in 'shelter in place' status, meaning no one was allowed onto or off of school property.
