Paper Ballot Requirement Heard by High Court

While it wouldn't effect the 2010 election, a lawsuit trying to force the state to make a paper record of electronic votes could affect the 2012 election.

The Texas Supreme Court hears arguments this morning on whether a lawsuit, first filed in 2006, can move forward.[pullquote quote="This is a very very important case. It really affects the integrity of our election system." credit="Jim Harrington"]  Texas Civil Rights Project Attorney Jim Harrington says the lawsuit seeks to force the state to have a paper record so votes cast on electronic machines can be verified and so a hard copy is available for recounts.  "This is a very very important case.  It really affects the integrity of our election system."  Harrington has long maintained that electronic voting machines are vulnerable to hackers and this paper trial is needed to ensure there is some way to make sure all votes are correctly counted.
