Opportunities To Expose North Texas Kids To Art
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Some scientists believe early exposure to art can help children in all aspects of later learning. But if you're no Vincent van Gogh in the art department, there's help.
Several museums and music groups in the Dallas Arts District offer special programs for kids and many even welcome toddlers.
Head to the Dallas Museum of Art on the first Tuesday of the month and you'll find the wine and cheese crowd has cleared for moms and dads and kids in strollers.
"It's specifically geared to parents and family with kids five and younger so they can come into the museum and get a taste of what we have to offer," explained Leah Hanson, who heads the Early Learning program at the museum.
The Saturday CBS 11 visited, there were art projects connected to the museum's Chagall exhibit. Kids could use colored pencils and water to create dreamy landscapes. They could also play dress up and get their picture taken.
There was also an art installment in a special kids area where children could look at an art piece and then create their own project, in this case, a sculpture made from cardboard, pipe cleaners and feathers.
The Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection both offer something similar, except their programs are on the first Saturday of the month.
Best of all, all three of the programs mentioned are free.
If music if more your thing -- both the Dallas Symphony and the Dallas Opera offer special concerts for families with children. The concerts aren't free, but the programs include special activities for kids, sometimes before or after the concert.
