Mineral Wells Football Player Collapses During Game

MINERAL WELLS (CBSDFW.COM) - Friday night's high school football game was a tough one for Community Christian School of Mineral Wells. They were playing against Azle Christian Schools, and one of the team's touchdowns was scored by 17-year-old Robby Mounce. However, by the fourth quarter, the team was trailing by 42 points.

Then, out of nowhere, the unthinkable happened.

Mounce collapsed on the field after being tackled. "I thought I watched my son die right in front of me," said Mounce's father. "It was hard to watch."

Mounce was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. Doctors there discovered that the teen had a blood clot on top of his brain. "This is severe, to the point where he became comatose," said Dr. Fernando Silva. "In fact, he had a seizure."

As Mounce was undergoing brain surgery, his family was praying. And a community was coming together to help out. "I see what happened to Robby," said Mounce's father. "His injury was not an accident, but it was something ordained by God. He wants to use it to show his glory and goodness to a lost world."

Mounce is now breathing on his own. While still in the ICU on Wednesday, he was able to mouth the words "I love you" to his mother.

The high school football team insists that Mounce's progress is from a higher power. "It's partially because God is so good," said teammate Isaiah Brazeal. "Robby is so after God, it's how he walks and leads his life."

In a show of support, the entire team shaved their heads to match Mounce – his head was shaved for brain surgery. And every team member is wearing the number 11 – Mounce's number.

The Mounce family has set up an account at Community Christian School of Mineral Wells to collect donations. It is called the Mounce Family Relief Fund, and contributions can be sent to the school – 2501 Garrett Morris Parkway, Mineral Wells, 76067.
