Little Elm Detective Killed In Line Of Duty; Suspect Dead

UPDATED | January 17, 2017 10:25 PM Little Elm Fire Chief Brian Roach confirms the standoff in a Little Elm neighborhood is over and the man who allegedly shot and killed Detective Jerry Walker is dead.
Police have not identified the suspect, nor have they said how he died.
LITTLE ELM (CBSDFW.COM) - An 18-year veteran of the Little Elm Police Department was killed in the line of duty Tuesday afternoon after responding to a report of an armed individual in a Little Elm neighborhood.
Detective Jerry Walker, 48, was among the first Little Elm officers who responded to the call.
He is survived by four children, the youngest a few months old and the oldest 22. Detective Walker is the first Little Elm officer killed in the line of duty.
When officers arrived they heard a man who had a rifle yelling from a backyard.
Detective Walker was one of several officers who tried to talk with the man as he went inside the home. But the suspect started firing at officers through a door or window.
Walker was shot in the upper body and was taken by CareFlite to Denton Regional Hospital where he was surrounded by family, friends and fellow officers.
He later died from his injuries.
"We are praying for the police officer and his family," said Little Elm Fire Chief Brian Roach earlier Tuesday evening.
Considered a role model by many in the community, Walker joined the force in September 1998.
One of the residents who witnessed the standoff expressed his sorrow about what happened.
"It's sad because he was there trying to keep us safe keep the neighborhood safe," said Little Elm resident Lajaun Rojas.
Little Elm Police Chief Rodney Harrison said the suspect who allegedly shot and killed the veteran detective remained barricaded in his home until his death sometime before 10:20 p.m.
Meantime, the Red Cross is set up at the Brenda Mills Senior Center for families displaced due to the standoff in Little Elm.
