Keller Mothers Wins Fight For Classroom Cameras

KELLER (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – A Keller mother fighting to place cameras in classrooms with special-needs students is finally seeing success.

Breggett Rideau has lobbied the Texas Legislature for nearly ten years to require school districts around the state to install and operate video cameras in some special education classrooms if requested by parents, a trustee or a staff member. The system is intended to ensure the safety of students with disabilities in classrooms where they spend more than half their school day.

In 2008 Rideau noticed her son coming home from Keller Middle School with mysterious bruises. She took him to the doctor with a knot on his head, a broken thumb and a dislocated knee.

Starting this school year, a new state law is taking effect requiring the use of classroom cameras. Rideau says she hopes to extend the law to the federal level to make classrooms safer for the most vulnerable students like her son.
