Innocence Project Study Leads To Case Misconduct Findings
DALLAS (AP) - The state association of district attorneys says that only a small handful of nearly 100 alleged "prosecutorial misconduct" cases in Texas show signs of willful mistakes by prosecutors.
The Texas District & County Attorneys Association released their findings Monday in response to a recent regional Innocence Project study, which identified 91 possible cases of misconduct statewide over a five-year period.
The issue of whether prosecutors have acted wrongfully has come up in a number of high-profile cases in Texas.
Among the most notable involved Michael Morton, a Central Texas man who was freed last year after being wrongfully imprisoned for a quarter-century in the killing of his wife.
The group behind the new report says prosecutors and law enforcement need more training on turning over evidence and preventing errors.
