HOV Lane Occupancy Changes Being Considered
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Drivers may need to prepare for changes to certain HOV lanes in North Texas. The changes could include how many people are required to be in a vehicle to use the high occupancy lane.
Interstate-35 in Farmers Branch will soon have new managed lanes. But the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is considering increasing the occupancy in each vehicle to three people.
Right now, there are several options on the table. The first would to continue to allow drivers in the managed lanes for free, but require that at least three people be inside the vehicle. Currently only two people are required to travel in a North Texas HOV lane. Another option would keep the required occupants at two, but charge a fee to use the lanes.
NCTCOG officials are also considering grandfathering in current HOV users and it's possible that could be done by issuing stickers for those vehicles.
But the proposed change considerations have many worried about the confusion that may be caused for motorists.
The NCTCOG wants to consider all options and have a decision made before the DFW Connector and LBJ Express Projects are complete.
