Former UT Dallas Student Indicted For Having Shotgun On Campus

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A former University of Texas-Dallas student has been indicted for having a weapon on campus.
According to police former University of Texas-Dallas student 19-year old Natas Centner Hastings of DeSoto had a 12 gauge shotgun and 6 rounds of '00' buckshot in his dorm room on the UT-D Richardson campus.
Last week a Collin County grand jury indicted Hastings on a charge of bringing a weapon to a prohibited place. The report says Hastings uses an alias of Jason Tate.
UT-D police were alerted to the gun by a complaining witness in September of 2014, according to the report. Portions of the report that detail reasons why police were alerted, or why Hastings had the gun and ammunition in his dorm room, have been redacted.
UT-D police have not returned calls for comment. However, school law enforcement officials have to be extra careful when dealing with weapons on campus, according to Dallas School District Police Craig Miller, a former Dallas Police detective.
"For us, our senses are always harkened by these types of situations where a student is in posession of a weapon or he has a picture of a weapon and what the intent to use that weapon is." said Miller who also said each case has to be reviewed separately. For instance if a student accidentally left a shotgun in a trunk after a weekend of hunting "that would certainly be looked at differently than a child or student might have a gun in their backpack that's actually on the campus." said Miller.
Hastings' attorney declined comment.
