UNIVERSITY PARK (CBSDFW.COM) - Shortly after 1:00 p.m. University Park firefighters were called to the corner of Hillcrest and McFarlin, across the street from Southern Methodist University, to battle a fire at Goff's Hamburgers.

By 6:00 p.m. firefighters were still using ladder trucks to put out hot spots.

The University Park Fire Chief Randy Howell says the plan is to knock down the walls at some point Friday evening.

Initially the fire was heavy with smoke and only two alarms, but the fire got bigger as fire crews battered smoke and flames from the ground and high above on ladders. The call went out for reinforcements as the fire grew to three alarms.

The entire retail center surrounding Goff's, consisting of several other restaurants, a day spa, and a computer care service center, were evacuated.

Even firefighters were kept out of the building, as they were instructed to battle the blaze defensively -- from the outside.

So far there have been no reports of injuries but some firefighters were given IVs due to the heat.

Chief Howell provided an update on firefighters' efforts and battling the heat as well Friday afternoon.

Goff's, and their 'charcoal broiled hamburgers', has been an institution in Dallas for decades.
