Dallas Area Rapid Transit Light-Rail Trains To Get Cameras

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The largest municipal rail system in Texas will be installing security cameras on its light-rail trains.

A North Texas newspaper is reporting that Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is expected to start getting the cameras this summer.

All DART buses currently have cameras. Train stations and some bus centers are also equipped with cameras.

DART spokesman Morgan Lyons says now it's time for the system to move to trains.

The agency is spending $4.8 million to outfit 48 of its 163 train cars this year. All trains should have cameras, with facial-recognition software, by 2018.

Security advocates have urged DART, which serves Dallas and a dozen other North Texas cities, to install cameras on trains.

It was just this week that DART announced the expansion of streetcar service. DART streetcars will now run seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to midnight.
