Cowboys' Jason Witten: 'Talk To Me In A Month' About Elliott Saga

OXNARD, CALIFORNIA (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Ezekiel Elliott's contract holdout is overshadowing Jason Witten's return from retirement and plenty of other things as the Dallas Cowboys open training camp in California.

Witten said "talk to me in a month" when the tight end was asked Saturday if Elliott's absence was casting a cloud over the high expectations for a franchise trying to get past the divisional round of the playoffs for the first time in nearly a quarter century.

The 37-year-old Witten is back for a 16th season after the franchise leader in catches and yards receiving spent a year as a broadcaster.

Of Elliott's desire for a new contract with two years remaining on his existing deal, Witten says, "My experience has been those things, around here anyway, those things usually work out."

Fourth-year back Darius Jackson is running with the first team with Elliott out. Jackson was a sixth-round pick the year the Cowboys drafted Elliott fourth overall in 2016.

The Cowboys will kickoff their new season against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium Sept. 8.
