Coding Boot Camps Popular Alternative to College

FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) – Inside the NTEC building in Frisco you'll find a small school called the Guild of Software Architects.

As the founder and lead instructor, Kevin Harris describes it as a "coding boot camp.".

Harris said "It's just an alternative form of education. It's just kind of like a high tech trade school."

Coding boot camps have become a fast growing college alternative for tech savvy students looking to learn how to build software and jump right into the work force.

Harris says the benefit is the students learn a valuable skill at a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost of a traditional 4-year college set up.

His current class is leaning how to build IOS mobile apps. It lasts 3 months, and cost just under 12-thousand dollars.

21-year old Seth Catchpool a student from TCU is enrolled the program and says for him the training at a coding boot camp has greater benefits.

Catchpool said, " I want to start my own company and I want to do that with an app that I create in this class."

The popularity of coding boot camps across North America is growing a rapid speed. Numbers released by coursereport.com suggest the number of students enrolled in these specialized training courses nearly doubles between 2015 and 2016. The 2016 numbers are projected be total of 17,966 students. 2015 had 10,333 students.

Harris says the mobile app business is thriving and as long as it is, there will be a huge demand for people wanting to learn how to code quickly and jump right into the business.

He said "Mobile is definitely not going anywhere."
