After Bullying Claim, School Spirit & Coach Support For Aledo
ALEDO (CBS 11 NEWS) - In the wake of a controversial high school football game, signs of school spirit and coach support are cropping up in the city of Aledo.
Merch Haus, a clothing retailer that does custom screen printing, is making a shirt this week in support of high school football Coach Tim Buchanan.
When the Aledo Bearcats - one of the top-ranked 4A football teams in Texas - beat the Western Hills Cougars 91 to 0, one Western Hills parent filed a complaint. The parent anonymously alleged that it was an act of bullying that Buchanan allowed his players to run up the score.
The story spread across national headlines, and both schools were the target of criticism.
Wednesday, Coach Buchanan was cleared of any wrongdoing.
The communities in Fort Worth and Aledo are now focusing on the next games.
Thursday, students at Western Hills told CBS 11 News, they're taking nothing personally, and are ready to move on. There's even talk of one of the school spirit groups showing support for Aledo by wearing orange and black colored ribbons.
"I think it's a great gesture that whether you win or lose, to show that kind of grace," said Merch Haus owner Cory Bergen.
Merch Haus is also making t-shirts with the slogan, "We Bac Buc," in support of Coach Buchanan. And they're selling them for $9.10. "We did want to have a little fun with it," Bergen said.
The shirts will be ready for Aledo's Friday night game versus Fort Worth Southwest. So far, they've received over 250 orders.
"[Coach Buchanan] is a very good guy. A class act," Bergen said. "I think any of the coaches from any other town would tell you that."
