In his first TV interview since announcing his retirement from Congress, the California Republican who was ousted as Speaker talks about an unruly House; his predictions for the 2024 elections; and the future he sees as part of a prospective Trump cabinet.
"I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways," McCarthy wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.
The House has rejected an effort to censure Democratic Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, scrapping a Republican attempt to condemn the only Palestinian-American in Congress over her recent rhetoric around the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
The former House speaker said he will run for reelection in 2024.
"The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant," said Rep. Steve Womack, who was presiding over the chamber.
Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a motion to vacate the chair Monday, two days after Speaker Kevin McCarthy relied on Democrats to pass a short-term spending bill and avert a shutdown.
Hours before a midnight deadline, Congress passed a short-term funding bill to keep the government running for 45 days.
"I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid," Rep. Matt Gaetz said of his plan to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership role.
The spending bill failed to win over a group of Republicans opposed to a short-term funding deal.
