WSU To Hold Tribute Concert For Late Professor

DETROIT (WWJ) - On Monday, Nov. 14, the Wayne State Big Band will pay tribute to the late Matt Michaels at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

Professor Emeritus Michaels passed away Nov. 2 at the age of 79. Michaels, a legendary pianist and arranger, co-founded Jazz Studies at Wayne State and directed the program from its inception in 1979 until his retirement in 2006.

As part of "Mondays at the Max with Wayne State" concert series, the Wayne State Big Band, a premier jazz ensemble conducted by Prof. Christopher Collins, will pay tribute to Michaels. The concert is a fundraiser for the Matt Michaels Jazz Studies Endowment, which will fund student concert tours and the Wayne State Jazz Guest Artist Series.

The concert will also feature guest artists from Detroit and Italy, as well as Michaels' former students. Guest artists include John Trudel, Dwight Adams, Rob Pipho, Russell Miller, Dan Pliskow, Cliff Monear, Jerry McKenzie, Bob Mojica, Ron Kischuk, Emanuele Cisi (Torino, Italy) and Fabio Giachino (Torino, Italy).

Tickets are available at the DSO box office: $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for WSU students. Friends of Music and DSO Civic Youth Ensemble Families receive a 50 percent discount.
