Woman shot, injured, during drive-by shooting on I-96 in Wayne County
A woman was shot on Interstate 96 in Wayne County early Tuesday, resulting in a temporary closure of the freeway as Michigan State Police searched for evidence.
The gunshot victim, a 27-year-old woman from Redford, was driving a car in a left center lane of westbound I-96 about midnight when another vehicle approached from behind in the left lane. As the vehicle approached, the driver heard multiple gunshots and the vehicle involved sped off.
She pulled over to the left shoulder of westbound I-96 near West Chicago Avenue, partially blocking the left lane with her car. She then ran to the nearby McDonald's restaurant at 9815 Grand River Avenue, where she called 911 and spoke with the Detroit Regional Communication Center.
After first responders arrived, the injured woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, and was reported in stable condition.
Michigan State Police ordered westbound I-96 between Joy Road and West Chicago Avenue closed for the investigation. Michigan Department of Transportation traffic reports show the highway reopened about 3:15 a.m.
"Troopers located items of evidence along the freeway," Michigan State Police F/Lt. Mike Shaw said about the search. "Right now troopers are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and get a better description of the unknown suspect vehicle."
Troopers ask that anyone who was a witness to the incident call 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.
