Woman Charged With Falsely Accusing Detroit Police Officer Of Rape

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 24-year-old Detroit woman is facing charges after allegedly falsely reporting being raped by a police officer.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says an investigation and a review of the scout car video did not support Velicia Stinson's claim that she was sexually assaulted by a Detroit cop in the 2200 block of Glynn Ct. the morning of Monday, Feb. 1.

In a statement, Worthy talked about the danger of Stinson's crime.

"The alleged actions of Ms. Stinson will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Falsely reporting a sexual assault perpetuates the ugly stereotype that women are lying. This is one of the biggest barriers to eradicating sexual assault in this country, and a reason why there are untested kits sitting on shelves in police departments across the country."

Worthy did not talk about a possible motive for making up the story.

Stinson was arraigned on Sunday on a felony charge of false report of a felony. Bond was set at $1,000, and a probable cause conference was scheduled for Thursday, May 19.

Stinson faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
