Wings Clinch, Appreciate 21-Year Playoffs Run
The Red Wings' goal at the start of every season is to win the Stanley Cup, not simply make the playoffs.
But just getting to the postseason year after year has been quite an accomplishment in this era of parity in the NHL. So the Wings were proud Monday to clinch a playoff berth for the 21st consecutive season with their 7-2 win over Columbus at Joe Louis Arena.
It is an amazing accomplishment. The next-longest active streak in the NHL is seven years, by San Jose, which is struggling to make it in this season. And the next-longest active run in any sport is 14 years, by the NBA's San Antonio Spurs.
