What To Consider When Recarpeting a Detroit Home

Whether it be too many stains, a desire to increase house sale value, the overdue change to a color that no longer works or a pesky accumulation of dander and allergens, are all common reasons to replace the carpet in a home. Detroiters have learned that carpeted homes are the better option where weather is cold for a good portion of the year. That's why recarpeting a house or room needs special consideration. Look to these tips before embarking on such a project.

1. Determine a budget. When thinking about recarpeting, first consider how much money you are willing to spend. If you replace a carpet with one that is much different than the original, furniture and decor may need to be changed as well. Along the same lines, a new carpet color could necessitate an entirely new wall color. If you plan to paint as well, choose the carpeting color first, since it will likely be around longer and will take more effort to change, then match it to paint swatches. The wall colors should be in the same family as your carpeting. As a general note, cool colors and warm colors don't mix well.

2. Find similarities. If you aren't keen on spending a fortune on redecorating, added on top of the cost of carpet and installation, stick to a similar style and shade. If a color change is necessary, try changing to a neutral color like taupe, or go with black which can easily be dressed up or down.

3. Consider pets. Pets certainly factor into the equation of carpeting. It is impossible to pick up every stray hair lost by a dog or cat. Invest in a carpet that helps conceal the appearance of shed hairs. A shaggy carpet or one that matches your pet's fur does a good job of hiding the hair until it can be vacuumed -- a task that can be done less often altogether with regular pet grooming.

4. Establish the differences between rooms. When recarpeting, it is recommended that you use the same color from room to room as this allows the eye to see the house as more spacious. It is true, however, that changing carpet colors between rooms can be a good idea, especially if the carpet serves as an artful inclusion (i.e. themed rooms like The Sun Room or The Mud Room). It is certainly cheaper to recarpet a smaller area rather than the entire home.

5. Remove Stains: If the primary motive behind wanting to re-carpet is due to stains, keep in mind that many stains can be removed after a deep cleaning. You may not need new carpet after all. Calling a professional to assess the condition is worth it, as cleaning a carpet is a much cheaper alternative.
