West Michigan Boy Grows Big Cabbage
MUSKEGON TWP. (AP) - A 9-year-old West Michigan boy says watering was just about all it took to grow a 22-pound cabbage in his backyard.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports Alex Andrews grew the cabbage at his home in Muskegon County's Muskegon Township as part of a school project. He earned a $1,000 savings bond for his efforts.
Alex is a fourth-grader at Orchard View's Cardinal Elementary.
The bond is being given out by the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program, which takes place across the country. The newspaper reports that members of Michigan's agriculture commission randomly selected his cabbage as the state's winner.
Cabbages can grow to more than 100 pounds.
