Weekend Traffic Tie-ups

If your travels take you downtown this weekend, you might want to brace for some major traffic backups.

WWJ's John Bailey says we are in for congestion in Detroit during the final weekend of the North American International Auto Show. Combined with a Red Wings game at the Joe, traffic is likely to be very heavy Saturday afternoon.

Downtown parking will also be at a premium. The nearby parking facilities -- the Cobo Roof and garages and the Joe Louis garage -- will load up early. The lots and garages away from Cobo are your best option – especially those along the people mover route to avoid a long, cold walk --  like the Renaissance Center, Greektown and Grand Circus Park.

Meantime, there are a couple of other construction areas to watch out for:

In Rochester Hills, there is a planned complete closure of east and westbound M-59 – with traffic routed off the freeway and right back on at the Crooks Rd exit and entrance ramps – Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

Weekend work could also slow the trip near Whitmore Lake, where as part of the overpass repair a lane closure is scheduled on SB US-23 near 8 mile, Friday night through Monday morning.

Also, for the Plymouth Ice Festival the following streets will be closed until Monday morning:
o EB & WB Penniman from Union to Harvey
o NB Main from Ann Arbor Trail to Penniman
o WB Ann Arbor Trail from Union to Main
o SB Union from Roe to Ann Arbor Trail
o NB & SB Forest Ave. from Ann Arbor Trail to Wing
