Undercover Cop Rescues Woman Found Bound And Shot; Husband Arrested

DETROIT (WWJ) - An undercover Grosse Pointe Park police officer has been credited with saving a woman's life after he discovered her shot and bound on Detroit's east side.

Detroit Police Asst. Chief Steve Dolunt said the officer was concerned when he spotted a pickup truck parked across from a field at Lyford and Gilbo, in the area of Conner and Van Dyke, near City Airport.

The officer stopped to help, he said, and was greeted by the male driver who flashed a phony police badge and told him he'd run out of gas and was OK, trying to shoo the officer away.

"The officer thought it was suspicious," Dolunt said. "He looked in the car, in the truck, observed a white female, shot twice, duct-taped by the wrists and by the ankles and severely beaten."

Dolunt said the officer, whose name has not been released, immediately took the driver into custody.

"This individual had taken all of her property and thrown it in the field across the street," Dolunt said. "We assume, obviously, he was going to kill her, but the officer was able to stop that before it happened."

"...This was great police work," added. "Again, this officer saved her life."

The man in custody, a white male, is the victim's husband, Dolunt said. He did not immediately release the man's name, but said he is 35 years old and a resident of Hazel Park.

The victim, who is 33 years old, was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Her condition was unknown later Wednesday.

Dolunt noted that this happened near the same field where the bodies of two Westland teens were found in 2012.
