U.P. Fans Fiercely Divided On The Football Field

ST. IGNACE, Mich. (WWJ) - These Michigan kids wear black and gold--and their favorite football team goes by the nickname "Saints." They're the Saints of LaSalle High School in St. Ignace.

But athletic director and head football coach Marty Spencer says the Saints loyalty only extends as far as the high school. When the pros play, Michigan's Upper Peninsula is fiercely divided.

"Roots in the western end that would definitely be Packers fans, but they're also trolls like myself who moved up here that are diehard Lions fans," Spencer said.

Spencer's Saints had an impressive playoff run of their own this year, making it to the state semifinals.

What are metro-Detroit Lions fans saying?

"I'm a fan, but I've seen 'em find different ways to lose too many times and, I don't know, I'm skeptical," one man told WWJ Newsradio 950. "Never give up any hope but, you know, they're going up against a formidable opponent," another said. Added another man: "yeah, they got a rough road, but uh, I think they might pull it off."

Catch the game on CBS Radio Detroit's 97.1 FM The Ticket. Pre-game starts at 7:00pm, with kick-off slated for 8:00pm.
