Mother, 12-year-old son found dead in Hazel Park home; police treating case as homicide

A 41-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son were found dead Monday at a home in Hazel Park, Michigan.

Hazel Park police said they were called to the scene at 4:15 p.m. Monday on a report of an unresponsive female. On arrival, the report said, officers found both of them dead in the home, with injuries "from apparent trauma."

The investigation is being handled as a homicide, although the police department said it "does not believe there is a danger to the community."

Officials have not yet provided the names of the victims, but a relative identified the woman as Linda Hill and her son as Kardi.

Family members of Linda Hill and her son visited their home on Berdeno Avenue throughout the day Tuesday.

Linda Hill's son, Damonte Hill, says his family is not coping well with the loss.

"I don't even know what would make someone do something like this; it's messed up. I really don't have too much else to say about it," said the victim's son, Damonte Hill. "As you would expect, everyone is heartbroken."

"Very sad and a horrible situation, because we live in a good neighborhood, and they were very nice people," said neighbor Ofelia De La Rosa. "Never heard anything about any kind of problems or anything like that."

Hazel Park Schools confirmed the boy was one of its students, and said a mental health professional would be available for students who might wish to meet with someone in response to the tragedy.

"We can't put a time frame on trauma. And so we'll make sure that all of those resources are in place. We also, when we sent out our letter, gave a list of resources that parents could contact, or just things to help them think through or have a conversation with their child," Amy Wilcox, Superintendent of Hazel Park Schools, said.

Damonte Hill says his mother had a vibrant personality.

"Fun, chill, very energetic, always good vibes, laughing, joking around," he said.

Damonte Hill called Kardi his best friend.

"That was my dog. Same thing, just joking around, you know, like he's like a younger version of me, always playing around, having fun with him," he said.

At this time, no arrests have been made in the incident.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at Linda Hill's home.
