Troy School Closed Due To Virus
International Academy East school in Troy will be closed Friday because of a suspected case of Norovirus.
The school will be cleaned over the next few days after 120 students and eight teachers at the school called in sick Thursday. 350 students attend classes at the school on Torpey Drive.
"With this particular kind of virus you are still contagious three days after your symptoms go away, so our concern was that students were home sick for a day then coming back to school because they felt better and inadvertently infecting their classmates without even knowing it," Kerry Birmingham, Director of Community and Media Relations for the Troy School District, told WWJ's Zahra Huber.
The Oakland County Health Department is investigating.
Birmingham said classes are expected to resume Monday after all surfaces are cleaned, but she adds if a child isn't feeling well on Monday parents should not send them to school.
