Tigers' Fister Hits Home Run At VA Hospital In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A bit of excitement Tuesday at the VA Hospital in Detroit where U.S. military veterans gathered to meet Detroit Tigers' starting pitcher Doug Fister.

But, it was Fister who says he felt honored to be in the presence of men and women who put their lives on the line for America's freedom. He says it's something he doesn't take lightly.

"You know, they've sacrificed a lot for us and the things we get to do. I get to go play a game every day and it's something that really puts life into perspective," said Fister.

"There's a lot of ups and downs throughout the day that you really think are important. But, all in all, what it comes down to is we're free and we've got a great life to live and we're very appreciative for it," he said.

Fister was also reminded of his grandparents. Two of them served in the U.S. military; one in the
Air Force, the other in the Navy.

Sixty-eight year old Dennis Sikkila sat waiting patiently in his wheelchair as others got their photos and autographs. Then, it was his turn.

"God bless you. Thank you for coming today," Sikkila said to Fister.

"No. Thank you for lettin' me be here. You fought for me. I thank you guys for everything you've done," replied Fister.

Fister later told reporters he hopes to return to the VA for another session of autographs, photos and Wii baseball with the veterans.
