The Snack Attack: Otis Spunkmeyer Introduces New Line Of Sweet Snacks With 'No Funky Stuff' [TASTE TEST]
Cookie maker Otis Spunkmeyer recently rolled out its new line of 20 sweet snack products that include "No Funky Stuff." Snack overload!
So, what exactly does No Funky Stuff mean? All of the products are made without artificial flavors or colors, high-fructose corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oils -- so you don't have to feel guilty about indulging.
To be honest with you, Otis Spunkmeyer mailed me a gift box of their new snacks, unsolicited -- but I promise that won't impact my review. Quite frankly, some of these were on my to-be-snacked list anyway so it's sort of like divine intervention.
Mini Loaf Cakes
Available in iced lemon and cinnamon crumb.
Let me tell you, these mini loaf cakes really taste like home-baked treats. The iced lemon cake almost melts in your mouth it's so moist. The cake itself has a light, refreshing lemon flavor with a thick layer of icing, which reminds me of the glaze you'd find on a danish.
The cinnamon crumb cake really surprised me. The topping has a robust cinnamon flavor without being too sugary or sweet, and it doesn't have that gritty texture that you find in other crumb cakes. The cake has a spongy texture is generously topped with the cinnamon crumble.
Crème Cakes
Spongy cake with a vanilla or caramel center. Available in golden crème and chocolate crème with caramel.
The golden creme cake is Otis' version of a Twinkie. The cake is soft and spongy, but a little sticky. The creme filling is light and airy and not too sweet. Is it better than a Twinkie? Not exactly, but it does come awfully close.
The chocolate creme cake is surprisingly decadent. Instead of the typical vanilla creme filling, it has a creamy caramel-flavored filling that makes an awesome combination with the chocolate. The cake, though, was so overly moist and sticky that it was falling apart.
If you were going to get one or the other, I'd say go for the chocolate.
Frosted Crème Cakes
Golden cake filled with cream and a thick layer of vanilla or strawberry icing. Available in golden with strawberry, frosted golden and chocolate frosted with caramel.
I tried the frosted golden version with vanilla icing. The cake seemed slightly denser than what's used in the regular creme cake. The frosting is super sweet but mixes nicely with the texture of the cake. Personally, I think it could have used a touch more filling to combat the denseness of the cake.
Mini Muffins
Bite-sized muffins available in blueberry, banana and chocolate chip.
I tried the blueberry version and it actually has real fruit! These little things were packed with blueberry flavor despite looking like they only had a few blueberries. The texture was moist but not sticky. They might be a little too big to eat in just one bite but each package comes with three muffins, and is the perfect size for a snack.
Mini Cupcakes
Bite-sized cupcakes filled with vanilla crème. Available in golden and chocolate.
I tried the chocolate cupcakes -- they were so soft and fudgey. The filling isn't fluffy and airy like I was expecting. It was denser than your average creme filling, but tastes so much better. It doesn't have that artificial vanilla flavor. And the ratio of cake to frosting to filling was perfect!
Cookies
Available in three classic flavors: chocolate chunk, oatmeal raisin and double chocolate.
I tried two kinds, the chocolate chunk and the oatmeal raisin. The chocolate chunk cookie was very soft and just a little too chewy for my liking. But it was packed full with chocolate chunks -- every bite had a piece. The oatmeal raisin cookie tasted like it came straight out of my mom's kitchen. The spice flavor was just right, the raisins were big and juicy and the texture of the cookie was soft and chewy with just the right amount of crumble. There also weren't any huge, dry oats, which is one of my biggest complaints about oatmeal cookies.
