Targeted Traffic Patrols To Begin Friday

WATERFORD TWP. (WWJ) - The Oakland County Sheriff's Office and Waterford Township joining forces to get drunk drivers off the roads.

"Michigan Night Patrols" begin this Friday on roads where statistics show a high number of alcohol related accidents.

Officers will be out in force, making stops for all traffic violations with an eye on drunk drivers.

Sheriff Mike Bouchard said these are not sobriety check points.

"A lot of states do those, but Michigan does not allow for sobriety check points," he said. "This is not intended to be that. It's intended to be focused on crash-related likely areas."

Waterford Police Chief Daniel McCaw said there will be  message signs alerting the public.

"So, it's not an enforcement program when we're trying to hide and sneak out and arrest somebody," said McCaw. "We're letting the public know that we're actively engaged with the Sheriff's Department in Waterford Township to make sure that we get drunk drivers off the road and that's the goal for us.

Patrols will begin along M-59.
